A Strategy for Bulky Scrap Metal in the Pacific

Category
Project

Bulky scrap metal is a major problem across many Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), as incomes rise and the incidence of vehicle and whitegoods ownership increases. NCE was engaged to work with waste agencies across 19 PICTs to estimate current generation rates and stockpiles of bulky scrap metal. Economic research, analysis and models were then used for the 19 PICTs to assess the potential revenues and fill lifecycle costs of establishing recycling of bulky scrap metal waste. This included assessment of the most efficient level of processing within each PICT, the relationships between world metal process and the viability of recycling, and regional solutions including shared mobile processing across smaller clusters of PICTs.
